Dead Sea Mud

deadseamud.jpgThe black mud found at the bottom of the Dead Sea, the deepest and most saline (8.6 times saltier than the ocean) sea in the world. The mud and water have been used for thousands of years in health and beauty treatments. The salt contains an extraordinary mineral content of calcium 14.4%, potassium 4.4%, magnesium 50.8% and sodium 30.4% and trace levels of zinc. In comparison, the salt in the water of most oceans and seas is approximately 97% sodium. The mud’s dark green colour can be attributed to a micro-algae known as Dunaliella salina, which produces carotenoid antioxidants and contains high levels of glycerol to help hydrate the skin and support its elasticity.
